Personality:
Hythlodaeus hails from the city of Amaurot, a spiraling, urban utopia existing in the distant past. In Hythloadaeus' time, mankind's duty was to shepherd the planet. This was done in a multitude of ways, by deigning not to interfere with the naturally-formed environment and phenomena, but also by creating and caring for life forms that populated the planet. Creating animate and inanimate objects used creation magicks - an ability most everyone was gifted with in varying degrees. With this magick, one could manipulate the life force flowing through the universe (called aether) into beings, called concepts. In this structured society, all concepts created by man were to be reviewed before being allowed into the ecosystem to ensure that they would not disrupt the balance of the planet. This review took place at the Bureau of the Architect, of which Hythlodaeus was the Chief.

His work as Chief of the Bureau of the Architect makes Hythlodaeus the most well-versed in concept creation, having to personally approve or deny all life forms, objects, or flora submitted by anyone for consideration. While the innerworkings of concept creation are his forte, its actual practice is not. Hythlodaeus is not very magickally-inclined. His creation and transformation skills are weak at best, and he makes no mistake in acknowledging his own limitations. He was at one point offered a seat on the government body known as the Convocation of Fourteen, but he declined the offer in favor of recommending his friend Hades (interchangeably called Emet-Selch in this application) instead. Hythlodaeus knew that, while he had some talents, Hades was far more capable and would be more suited for the role.

As for Hythlodaeus’ talents, he is one of few with the gift of soul sight. Plainly, this means that he is able to see clearly the concentration of aether that makes up an individual’s soul. Each soul has its own color, making it easy to distinguish one person from another. Soul sight is also advantageous for locating someone obscured by objects, even in a crowd or miles away. It was this gift that netted him the offer for a seat on the Convocation, and even though Hades was possessed of the gift of soul sight as well, it is said that Hythlodaeus' sight was greater. His reason for passing the job offer to Hades, however, was that his friend was more well-rounded when it came to many other natural abilities, whereas Hythlodaeus only boasted one true talent. While his assessment of himself is true, Hythlodaeus can be self-deprecating in his pursuit of being honest with himself, oftentimes downplaying his necessity or abilities as a whole. He sees his role in life as supporting rather than leading and mentions that his role will be fulfilled once he helps his two best friends fulfill theirs.

Hythlodaeus is good-natured, helpful, patient, and kind. He never misses an opportunity to set his friends up for success, seeing situations where he knows their expertise could make them shine. Emet-Selch in particular always needed a nudge to get himself involved in others’ affairs, and Hythlodaeus was always there to give him that push so others could see his talents. For example, on Elpis, Hermes direly needed someone to teach the charybdis concept to fly. Hythlodaeus suggests that the Warrior of Light and Meteion go and ask Emet-Selch for help, for he knew Emet-Selch couldn’t refuse an honest plea. Emet-Selch acquiesced and used his magic to bring the situation to a positive conclusion. It was due to the meddling of Hythlodaeus and their mutual friend Azem that Hades assisted so many and received so many accolades, and the reason Hades was accepted into the seat of Emet-Selch on the Convocation.

Hythlodaeus is also a bit of a rule-skirter. It was said in an interview that Hythlodaeus was “the scariest of the Ancients” due to his irresponsible nature. Azem, the other friend in their trio, was a known adventurer, and Hythlodaeus would always use his position of power in the Bureau of the Architect to aid Azem’s cause. So trusting was he in his friend’s ideals (and so hesitant to say no) that he procured powerful concepts from the archives to lend out – an act that was surely against protocol. For example, he took the concept of the monster Ifrita so Azem could draw power from a volcano on the brink of eruption into it and slay the beast, therefore preventing the eruption and saving a village at the foot of the volcano. His intentions are always good, but his penchant for bending the rules to fit his idea of righteousness, paired with his inability to deny others' passion, could very well lead Hythlodaeus into trouble one day. He himself admitted to approving concepts solely because their creators were so passionate about them.

Along with this irresponsible streak is a love of good-natured humor. Hythlodaeus loves to see the positive and the humorous in a situation, even if it is tense or unpleasant. He will cheerfully rib his friends, especially Emet-Selch, even if they're in a sour mood. He tends to be sarcastic and dry at points, which is more laughable when juxtaposed with his ever-sunny smile and laugh. Do not mistake his optimism for ignorance, though. He is well able to size up predicaments and offer intuitive insight, even being called "incurably smug" in an official side-story because of his intelligence. His humor doesn't always persist, however, and if his friends are truly upset, he rushes to their aid in a more serious manner. When Emet-Selch became irate and left the room during the conversation about the Final Days in Elpis, Hythlodaeus immediately ran after him, abandoning the conversation himself in order to attend to his friend.

Amaurot met its end during the Final Days, an apocalyptic event that ravaged the planet. In a desperate bid to halt the devastation, half of the Amaurotines sacrificed themselves in order to summon the god Zodiark in hopes that he would hear their call and spare the survivors from their doom. Hythlodaeus was one of the volunteers to sacrifice themselves for the summoning, seen bidding farewell to Emet-Selch in a recollection of the final moments of the apocalypse. This altruism should come as no surprise, for Hythlodaeus always championed his friends and would go to any lengths to support them. While Emet-Selch and Azem both lived, Hythlodaeus offered up himself in order to give them a chance at a future. This is the canon point I am taking him from when he enters Ryslig. His final act was of self-sacrifice. I will briefly outline the rest of his known canon from here on for completion's sake.

Thousands of years later, as a shade of a memory in Emet-Selch’s recreation of Amaurot, Hythlodaeus acknowledges that he is not real and strives to assist the Warrior of Light in whatever way he can. He manages to distract them from the pain of the Light overwhelming their body by having them sit and have a conversation with him. He describes how he can see the souls of the Warrior and Ardbert, who was also there, and how they were the same color. Later on, his shade gives the Warrior crystals containing memories of the Convocation of Fourteen, including Azem’s crystal which was made in secret. He tells the Warrior that he would rather his friend lived, but added that he was not sure if he thought this of his own free will, or because he was a creation of Emet-Selch.

On the moon at Mare Lamentorum, the spirit of the real Hythlodaeus appears and saves the Warrior of Light from being ambushed by the other souls of the sacrificed. He holds them back in order for the Warrior to finish their task of confronting the imprisoned Zodiark. Hythlodaeus acts in this way because the Warrior of Light is a fragment of his dear friend Azem and, as mentioned before, he considers his role to help Azem and Emet-Selch realize their dreams to the best of his ability. At the end of Endwalker, the Warrior of Light summons Emet-Selch and Hythlodaeus, and they use their powers together to create a field of Elpis flowers to assist their friend in bringing down the Endsinger. As Hythlodaeus and Emet-Selch fade away for the final time, Hythlodaeus notes that he hopes they can all meet again in the next life and be reunited as friends once more. In the end, Hythlodaeus did all he could to help both of his friends, from giving them a nudge in the right direction, to sacrificing himself so they both could live.
